MACON, Ga. – During his two seasons playing men’s basketball for Mercer University, guard E.J. Kusnyer made a living shooting baskets from beyond the three-point arc. Now, the Pittsburgh, Pa. native will officially be making a living from “long distance” after signing a professional contract with the Rotterdam Challengers in Holland’s Eredivisie league.

Kusnyer made 107 three-point baskets (out of 274 attempts), ranking him second in the entire nation in 2009-10. Kusnyer’s total was also an MU single-season record and – despite the fact he only played two seasons with the Bears – Kusnyer ranks No. 2 in career treys made with 190.
As a senior, Kusnyer averaged 11.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, hitting 39 percent from three-point range, 38 percent from the field overall and 76 percent from the free throw line. He was the only Mercer player to start all 33 games played by the Bears, who came within a single game of making the NCAA tournament last season.
Kusnyer is the third MU player coached by Bob Hoffman to sign a European contract this summer.  Danny Emerson, who finished his career with Kusnyer in 2009-10, will be playing in Belgium, while Calvin Henry (2006-09) recently signed a professional contract in Germany. All three were teammates in 2008-09.
“It’s always been my dream to play basketball at the professional level and I’m thankful to every coach, teammate, and person that has helped me to achieve that dream,” said Kusnyer after closing his first professional deal.  “I am especially grateful to the Mercer community and all the great people that supported me in the two years I was a Bear.
“I am super excited to be so close to former teammates Danny Emerson (Belgium) and Calvin Henry (Germany).  We are already trying to figure out ways to meet up and see parts of Europe together.”
Hoffman believes Kusnyer will be very successful in Holland’s pro league.
“I believe (the Rotterdam fans) will love E.J.’s exciting style of play,” said Hoffman. “He can provide instant offense and an immediate spark for a team. Plus, he is very unselfish and looks to do whatever is best for the good of the team.
“His work ethic is unchallenged and he is one of the most coachable players I have ever had. Above being an outstanding basketball talent, E.J. has been a great representative for our program, on and off the court.”
